A clear starting point for your recovery

An initial physiotherapy assessment gives you the opportunity to discuss what you have been experiencing and what you would like to achieve from treatment.

Your physiotherapist will assess relevant movement, strength, flexibility and functional factors before discussing appropriate treatment and rehabilitation options.

  • Discuss your symptoms and concerns
  • Understand how your symptoms affect daily life
  • Assess movement and physical function
  • Establish realistic treatment goals
  • Create a personalised rehabilitation approach

Your assessment, step by step

We take a structured approach so that you understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and what can be done to help you move forward.

01

Your Story

We discuss your symptoms, history, lifestyle, activities and what you want to achieve.

02

Physical Assessment

Relevant movement, strength, mobility and functional factors are assessed according to your presentation.

03

Clinical Findings

We explain the findings in clear language and discuss factors that may be affecting your recovery.

04

Treatment Plan

We agree practical next steps based on your goals, assessment findings and rehabilitation needs.

Assessment that looks beyond the symptoms

Good physiotherapy starts with understanding the person, not simply treating a painful area. Our assessment approach considers your movement, function, lifestyle and recovery goals.

Patient-centred approach

Your concerns and goals remain central to the assessment process.

Structured assessment

A clear and organised assessment helps guide appropriate treatment.

Clear explanations

We aim to explain findings and recommendations in straightforward language.

Focus on progress

Your treatment plan can evolve as your movement and confidence improve.

Feel prepared for your first appointment

Knowing what to expect can make your first appointment easier and more comfortable.

Allow enough time

Your first appointment may involve a detailed discussion and physical assessment, so allow enough time without feeling rushed.

Tell us about your symptoms

Be open about when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse and how they affect your normal activities.

Discuss your goals

Let us know what you would like to get back to, whether that is work, exercise, sport or everyday movement.

Wear comfortable clothing

Comfortable clothing that allows the relevant area of your body to be assessed can make movement testing easier.

Ask questions

Your appointment is also an opportunity to understand your condition and discuss the treatment options available to you.

Leave with a plan

Where appropriate, we will discuss practical next steps to support your rehabilitation between appointments.

Build a rehabilitation plan around your life

Initial assessment FAQs

The appointment normally begins with a discussion about your symptoms, history and goals, followed by an appropriate physical and functional assessment. Your physiotherapist can then discuss the findings and possible next steps.

If relevant, bring information about previous treatment, investigations or medication. It can also be useful to think about your symptoms, activities that aggravate them and your main rehabilitation goals.

Comfortable clothing that allows movement and, where appropriate, access to the area being assessed is generally recommended.

Where appropriate, your physiotherapist may recommend exercises or other self-management strategies as part of your rehabilitation plan.

You can use our online booking page or contact the team directly to discuss an appointment.
